"It's based on a gold disk from the Moche culture, which was a pre-Incan society on coastal Peru. Cats in Moche culture encapsulated the dual aspects of attacker and protector, but they are generally associated symbolically with the military, religion and politics. The face is a human-feline mix which I think accounts for the contradictions in its expression. In one way tragic and distressed, in another fierce and determined. These emotions seemed to resonate with recent times."
